Tsunami Update

The death toll now stands at over 50,000-- roughly equal to every man, woman and child in our neighboring community of Oak Park, Illinois. It's hard to shake the many images now being broadcast on TV and over the internet. The eyewitness accounts from the beach communities in Sri Lanka and Thailand are impossible to comprehend. With no warning, the ocean started to retreat-- 50 yards, 100 yards, 500 yards. An eerie calm settled in briefly, perhaps for 10 minutes. Then the ocean reversed itself, and came rushing back as a 30 foot wall of water. The few survivors managed to race inland, sometimes climbing trees or just holding on to any stationary object for dear life. Absolutely awesome. Pray, write a check, do something.

So far, it looks like at least 20,000 souls have perished from the earthquake and resulting tsunamis. And much of the devastation is in areas that already suffer from severe poverty. While we enjoy the aftermath of our Christmas gift-giving, let's not forget to pray for those suffering from the aftermath of the earthquake. We count our blessings.
